You don't have to hop on your bike for long to find yourself between scenes which would be at home on an anchor butter advert. There are more bikes than people, and there are so many different types of people. The types of people I've been getting to know in the last couple of months are the Buddhist types, mainly the types who enjoy reading (which is lots of you gladly).

I joined Windhorse Publications in October 2010 and since then I have learned a great deal. I've been enjoying some admin, marketing, filing, photocopying, posting, emailing, snail mailing, phoning and the odd cup of tea. It is more often than not an odd cup of tea too. I'm sure lots of you have a collection of tea that could rival a Twining's Tea commercial but at home I rarely touch the stuff. After working at Costa I gave up caffein for about six months and steered clear of most hot drinks. I've never been into breakfast tea, it tastes to me like warm water with a hint of.. eugh. But on my first day at Windhorse I found the cupboard a whole new sensory experience. As some of you might know Sarah is a keen Chai drinker. She showed me the ways of Chai and now there's no going back for me, it was for me the gateway tea into a new world. It was the perfect time of year for Chai tea too, the spicy festive warmth so suits Christmas. Nowadays I enjoy fruit teas as I find them more refreshing and I'm not so keen on soya milk.

A good cup of tea rehydrates your body and rests your mind. Holding a hot cuppa helps the circulation in your fingers and offering a cup of tea to your colleagues is the quickest and most basic form of team building exercise on the market.

It's been a while...

We've been pretty busy here at WPHQ but we haven't forgotten you. Of course we like to wish people that everyday but today being World Book Day we'd like to make it especially clear. To celebrate we're giving away 2 copies of 'Writing your Way' by Manjusvara. To win just tell us the name of the creative writing workshops that the author runs throughout the year and which the book grew from. Email your answers to info@windhorsepublications.com, the first two correct emails win the prize (only one book per mailing address). Competition closes at 9pm tonight, 4th March 2010.

In other news, we're excitedly producing a new book detailing the history of the FWBO from conception to present day. It's written by one of our best-selling authors, Vajragupta, and offers an honest, open, and (very) compelling account of the growth of this international Buddhist community.

As the author himself says: "This is the story of a circle of friends dreaming a dream, and working to make it a reality...It's the nitty-gritty story of how a community evolves. It's a story of idealism and naivety, growth and growing pains, hard work and burn-out, friendship and fall-out."

We're planning to launch it at the FWBO International Retreat this summer. This is our book of 2010 and we're definitely expecting it to make a splash.

New year, new office

First of all, happy new year to all. a literature of the fantastic. They are often wordy, meandering, and highly repetitive. Typically, they contain little doctrinal content but are instead crammed full of luxurious, intoxicating - and sometimes garish - imagery. For many a reader the apparent literary incontinence of these texts represents a barrier to entry which is never hurdled. While understandable, it means that a precious opportunity to become immersed in a dimension in which the spiritual is evoked through scintillating images is missed.

The classic Mahayana scriptures invite the reader to participate in a visionary pilgrimage, following an itinerary of breathtaking vistas which have the power to transform the imagination and to draw the reader into a dimension of heightened awareness and meaning. In Mahayana terms this dimension could be termed a samadhi or ‘vision-world’. The mythic narrative of the text leads the reader through a series of such vision-worlds which communicate the Mahayana message in terms of light, colour, space, and scale. Through dwelling in these vision-worlds we are able to soak in the cosmic light of Mahayana Buddhism.

A wonderful example is the Gandavyuha Sutra which records the pilgrimage towards Awakening of Sudhana, a youth inspired by the Bodhisattva Ideal. In the course of the text, Sudhana encounters a series of spiritual benefactors – 53 in all – each of whom dazzles Sudhana with their heady attainments. Essentially, each benefactor opens for Sudhana a portal into a vision-world, each more fantastic than the last. The text culminates in his entry into the dazzling and mystical Vairochana’s Tower, containing an infinite number of equally large towers, which mysteriously remain distinct while fully interpenetrating one another. The doctrinal message – that all things are interconnected – could be summed up in just a couple of paragraphs, and yet the sutra extends to several hundred pages.

The lavish imagery might easily be dismissed as superfluous, yet my experience is that only through allowing the images to work upon my mind, to wash over me, do I begin to grasp the message of the text. The visionary excess then is not an optional extra but integral to the core intention of the text. Through exposing ourselves to this imagery we begin to gain a sense of the scale and grandeur of the Mahayana vision. The text then is not passive but active, drawing us into a vital drama which is the Awakening of all beings throughout all worlds and all times. This drama is unfolding constantly and constitutes a cosmic narrative within which the workaday life of the individual Mahayana Buddhist plays out. Through reading, or better participating in, a Mahayana sutra we are able to connect with this cosmic narrative.

Nagapriya

www.nagapriya.com
www.windhorsepublications.com

Visions of Mahayana Buddhism: Awakening the Universe to Wisdom and Compassion by Nagapriya will be published at the end of June. Nagapriya has been praised in the past by authors such as David Loy for offering new, inventive ways of rethinking traditional Buddhism. Ways which show how Buddhism's relevence is just as deep in the 21st century West as it was in ancient India.

This project has been a long one, necessarily so, and the result is a unique guide to the landscape of the Mahayana (the 'Great Way' or 'Great Path'). Japanese Zen, Chinese Chan and Korean Buddhism all have their roots in this school of Buddhism, which champions acts of compassion and kindness. In Visions of Mahayana Buddhism, Nagapriya presents an overview of the Mahayana which is knowledgeable, readable and wise.

Read an extract here.

Visions of Mahayana Buddhism will be announced via Facebook and Twitter as soon as it hits the shelves.

A publishing company without paper?

A publishing company without paper? That's right, no notes, no printing, no new paper. This is the Windhorse Publications pledge for today, World Environment Day. We'll scribble down any notes on old, already used paper and the printer will stay turned off for the entire day.

We've already set up an Environmental Policy and we're passionate and determined to make it powerful and to make it stick.

Saving the Earth by Akuppa John Wigham will be out in October, there are loads of inpirational tips and ideas to get you fired up and he also shows how Buddhist teachings, and meditation, can keep you bouyed up and beat off complacency and depression. There's an extract here followed by some great suggestions...

"If we practise environmentalism as a list of rules bolted on to our existing lifestyle, we might find it's an unwanted complication; just one more thing to think about. But if we use our imagination and think of it as a way of cultivating a richer connection with life, the opposite is likely to be true.

Many people in the West are locked into high-income high-consumption ways of life, working long hours to buy the best cars, holidays, and electronic gadgetry. Sometimes we get into self-perpetuating loops, earning the money to buy the car that we need for work; or to squeeze enough enjoyment out of one fortnight's holiday to compensate for overworking the rest of the year.

Some people have embraced the idea of `voluntary simplicity' and made radical changes to their lifestyles, working less and consuming less. Some are motivated by environmental concerns, while others are escaping the rat race. Many have found that their lives have been enriched, rather than impoverished, by the experience. It can reduce stress, sweep away a lot of the time-consuming clutter of life (buying, cleaning, maintaining, and insuring things), and encourage more creativity and communication.

The Buddha taught simplicity as a guideline for living because he knew how easily distracted we are, how easily we can get caught up in inconsequential detail. Being caught up in details alienates us from other people, or brings us into competition or conflict with them. The more we can open ourselves up to the question of how much is really necessary, the more likely we are to be in harmony with others and with the natural world."

A few small ideas which will make a really big difference...

1. Switch to green electricity
2. Insulate your home
3. Invest in good projects by finding out if your bank have a solid ethical policy
4. Eliminate junk mail by putting up a small sign or visit www.mpsonline.org
5. Drawing on
the themes of Nargarjuna’s famous scripture, Precious Garland of Advice for a King, this book explores the relationship between an ethical lifestyle and the development of wisdom. Covering
both personal and collective ethics, Sangharakshita considers such enduring themes as pride, power and business, as well as friendship, love and generosity. Out April 2009. Why don't most Windhorse Publications authors have Christian names?

A. Many of Windhorse Publications’ authors have been ordained into the Western Buddhist Order (WBO). When someone feels that they would like to devote themselves fully to Buddhism in the context of the WBO they are ordained as a member and given a name in Sanskrit (one of the earliest Buddhist languages). This signifies their rebirth into the Buddhist spiritual tradition and their place in the Buddhist ‘family’ (usually referred to as Sangha). Often names, when translated, highlight attributes the member should develop or celebrate qualities they already have. All the income from the sales of our books is invested in publications and projects aimed at spreading the Buddha's teaching around the world. Every time you buy one of our books, you are helping support us in our revolutionary way of working and making it possible for the lives of more and more people to be transformed by the liberating message of the Buddha.
Set up in the early 1970s by members of the Western Buddhist Order, Windhorse Publications has developed considerable experience in presenting the teachings of the Buddha to the Western world. Most of our authors are Westerners who have dedicated their lives to following the Buddhist path. This means they are able to share with us their invaluable experience of living an authentic Buddhist life in the midst of rapidly changing societies. Our books contain the principles by which we try to live our lives. Therefore we give a lot of care and attention to every stage of the process - from editing to design through to sales and marketing.

Why a windhorse?

The windhorse is taken from the Tibetan tradition. This mythical beast flies over the earth carrying three precious jewels on its back to those who need them. The Three Jewels are the Buddha, the Dharma (the teaching of the Buddha), and the Sangha (the community of the Buddha's Enlightened followers).
So with this image to inspire us, we offer these books and our efforts for the benefit of all sentient beings.

How to order our titles

UK
www.windhorsepublications.com

USA

Perseus
Tel: (800) 283-3572
Fax: (800) 351-5073

Australia

Windhorse Books

Tel: 61 - 2 - 9519 8826

Fax: 61 - 2 - 9519 8827

email: books@windhorse.com.au

web: http://www.windhorse.com.au/

South Africa

Bacchus Books
Phone and Fax: 27 11 679 1539
Email: bacchus@telkomsa.net

Hong Kong/Singapore/Malaysia/Indonesia/Brunei

Tel:+65 64 83 59 53
email: johnfrancis@horizonbooks.com

Web: http://www.horizonbooks.com.sg/
